The Ntarama memorial, about 20 minutes' drive from Nyamata, is a church where several thousand people were killed in April 1994. Like the nearby Nyamata memorial, the building has been preserved as it was found after the genocide: victims' clothing, bones, and personal effects remain visible inside.
Ntarama also has a memorial garden and a wall of names behind the church — a quieter, more contemplative space than the church interior itself. A resident guide offers tours in English or French; donate at the end, as the site receives little government funding.
Take the highway from Kigali toward Nyamata and follow signs for Ntarama before you reach the town.
