The Mahakali Caves are a group of 19 Buddhist rock-cut caves in Andheri, carved between roughly the 1st century BCE and the 6th century CE. The complex is also known as the Kondivite Caves, and includes simple monastic cells, prayer halls, and weathered reliefs.
They are less polished than Mumbai's better-known Elephanta Caves, but they are much easier to reach from the western suburbs. Visit early in the day for cooler weather and enough time to look closely at the carving that survives.
