Residential Palace

Private palace of Cyrus with early Achaemenid relief carvings

The private palace of Cyrus, a short walk from the audience hall. It was smaller and more intimate, with columned porticoes on two sides and mud-brick living quarters behind them. Several column bases and a few standing column drums survive. A relief carved on a doorjamb shows a figure in an Elamite robe — one of the earliest examples of what would become the classic Achaemenid royal image. The contrast between the open, light-filled porticoes and the enclosed mud-brick rooms gives a sense of how the palace was actually used for shade and cool air in the hot Fars summers.
