Island Peak (6,189m) — properly Imja Tse — is the most popular trekking peak in the Khumbu and one of the most accessible 6,000m summits in the Himalayas. It requires no previous climbing experience but demands real fitness and a willingness to use crampons, fixed ropes, and ice axes in the summit section. Most trekking agencies offer guided Island Peak climbs as an add-on to the standard EBC or Gokyo trek, adding three to four extra days to the itinerary.
The peak sits above the Chhukung valley, a day's walk east of Dingboche. The standard route climbs to a high camp at 5,600m the day before the summit attempt, then tackles the final section — which involves a steeply angled ice face and then a ridge traverse — before dawn to ensure a safe descent before afternoon deterioration. Summit views encompass Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, and Ama Dablam at close range.
A climbing permit (around US$250–350 in season) is required, obtainable through the Department of Tourism in Kathmandu. Technical equipment — crampons, ice axe, harness, and helmet — can usually be rented in Namche Bazaar or brought from Kathmandu. A guide and at least basic crampon training before arrival are strongly recommended.
