The Miraculous Journey

Fourteen large bronze sculptures by Damien Hirst line the plaza outside Sidra Medicine hospital in West Bay, tracing the development of a human foetus from fertilisation to birth. The work is frank and anatomically detailed; the final standing newborn is 14 metres tall. It was installed in 2013 and has become one of Doha's more talked-about public art pieces.

The sculptures are on public display and accessible without charge. The hospital itself is a women and children's medical facility. The location — in the middle of a busy West Bay district — means the sculptures sit amid traffic and glass towers rather than a designed setting, which gives the work a certain incongruous intensity.

A story
Damien Hirst's fourteen-sculpture sequence outside Sidra Medicine was commissioned by Qatar Museums as part of a sustained effort to bring major contemporary art into the city's public spaces. Hirst proposed the work in 2013 after a visit to the hospital during its construction. The final sculpture in the sequence — a 14-metre newborn emerging, still attached to the umbilical cord — is one of the largest bronze sculptures in the world.
