Abel Tasman Coast Track

The Coast Track is the obvious headline activity in Abel Tasman: 60 kilometres of well-graded coastal walking, with a hut or campsite at the end of each day's section. Most people walk it over three or four days, north from Marahau to Wainui or Totaranui, though strong walkers do it in two and an unhurried itinerary takes five.

The path is easy by Great Walk standards — no significant climbs, no exposed alpine sections, and the highest point is barely above sea level. The tidal crossings at Awaroa and Bark Bay are the main planning constraint; both have to be timed around low water, and ignoring the tide table means a long detour or a wet wade. Huts (Anchorage, Bark Bay, Awaroa, Whariwharangi) must be booked through DOC well in advance for the December–February peak; campsites need bookings year-round.

A story
The Coast Track was designated one of New Zealand's Great Walks in the early 1990s and has been so heavily booked ever since that the Department of Conservation operates a permit system for huts and campsites year-round — the only Great Walk where you can lose your spot by missing your booked start date.
