Clifden

Clifden is the unofficial capital of Connemara: a cheerful, modest town strung along a hillside above a tidal inlet, with the Atlantic visible in the distance and the Twelve Bens behind. It has the only concentration of shops, restaurants, and accommodation in the western half of the region, and most visitors use it as their base.

The town itself is not remarkable architecturally, but its position is fine and the surrounding coastline is excellent. The Sky Road — a 13 km circuit west of the town over a dramatic headland — is one of the best short drives in Ireland, with Atlantic views on three sides. The ruined Clifden Castle, home to the d'Arcy family who founded the town, stands on the Sky Road with views to the sea. The town's music pubs — particularly in summer — are lively and welcoming. The Connemara Pony Show in August is the biggest event of the year.
