Kilkee Cliffs

Clifftop walk west of town over sea stacks, coves and old shipwreck sites

West of the town, past the Diamond Rocks, a clifftop path follows the coast with views over sea stacks, coves and the islet of Illaunonearaun. It's a dramatic walk on a wild day, with the Atlantic heaving against the rocks below, and a good alternative to the much busier Cliffs of Moher further north.

Keep well back from the edge, especially in wind. North of town, a separate hike from the golf club leads to Corbally Cliff, Byrne's Cove and George's Head.

A story
On 30 January 1836 the Intrinsic, sailing from Liverpool to New Orleans, was blown into a bay near Bishop's Island and smashed against these cliffs. All 14 crew were lost, and the inlet is still called Intrinsic Bay. Fifty years later to the day, the coal ship Fulmar sank just north of Kilkee.
