The Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland, opened in 1976 and is the largest church in the country, built to hold the crowds of the big pilgrimage days. Its ambulatory is lined with pillars donated by every county in Ireland. Pope John Paul II gave it basilica status when he visited for the shrine's centenary in 1979. It stands in the Shrine grounds a short walk from the old parish church and the Apparition Chapel.
