Brugnato Cathedral

11th-century cathedral on the site of a Benedictine abbey

The co-cathedral of Brugnato — Santi Pietro, Lorenzo e Colombano — stands on the site of an early Benedictine abbey said to have been founded by followers of the Irish saint Columban in the 7th century. The current church is a Romanesque building from the 11th century, modified in the Baroque period but never overwhelmed by it: the crypt and parts of the apse still carry the original stonework.

Brugnato itself was the seat of a tiny independent bishopric from 1133 until Napoleonic times — an unusual survival for a village this small. The cathedral is open most days; the diocesan museum next door has a small but well-displayed collection of liturgical silver and medieval manuscripts.
