The castle that gave the town its name was founded in the twelfth century by Bernard de Balliol. Its ruins, including the round tower of the inner ward, stand on a rocky cliff high above the Tees, with views up the river and across to Startforth. It belonged later to Richard III, whose boar emblem is carved above a window. Run by English Heritage.
