Hexham Abbey

Abbey church on the market place with Saint Wilfrid's Saxon crypt of 674

Saint Wilfrid founded a monastery here in 674, and the crypt he built beneath the church, made of reused Roman stone, is one of the finest surviving Anglo-Saxon structures in England. The church above is mostly medieval and Victorian, with a night stair the canons used to come down from their dormitory, the Saxon Frith Stool, and the tombstone of a Roman cavalry standard-bearer. It is free to visit and still a working parish church.
