Hexham Old Gaol

Fourteenth-century prison, now a museum of the border reivers

Built in the 1330s, the Old Gaol is thought to be the oldest purpose-built prison in England. It is now a small museum about life on the lawless Anglo-Scottish border, and the reiver families who raided across it for three centuries. You can go down into the dungeon. Opening is seasonal.
