Victoria Tunnel

A Victorian coal-wagon tunnel under the city that became an air-raid shelter, seen on guided tours

A wagonway tunnel built in the 1840s to carry coal from the Town Moor down to the Tyne, and turned into an air-raid shelter in the Second World War. The Ouseburn Trust runs guided tours of a restored section from its entrance in the Ouseburn valley. Book ahead, and wear sturdy shoes.
