High Force

The Tees plunging 21 metres over the Whin Sill, England's biggest waterfall by volume

High Force is where the River Tees drops 21 metres over a cliff of dolerite, the hard rock of the Whin Sill. After heavy rain it is the most powerful waterfall in England. A short woodland path from the High Force Hotel leads to the foot of the fall; the Pennine Way follows the opposite bank to a viewpoint at the top. Low Force, a series of smaller falls a mile and a half downstream, is free to visit and worth the walk.
