Arbeia guarded the mouth of the Tyne and stored the grain that fed the garrisons along the wall. Its west gate has been rebuilt to its full height, along with a barrack block and the commanding officer's house, so you get a better sense of what a Roman fort looked like than anywhere else on the wall. The museum has the tombstone of Regina, a British freedwoman married to a man from Palmyra in Syria. Entry is free.
