The Piece Hall

Georgian cloth hall of 1779 around a vast courtyard, now shops, cafés and concerts

Built in 1779 for the handloom weavers of the Calder valley, who rented its 315 small rooms to sell their "pieces" of woollen cloth, the Piece Hall is a great square of two- and three-storey colonnades around a sloping courtyard. It is the only Georgian cloth hall left in Britain. After a long restoration it reopened in 2017, and the rooms now hold independent shops, cafés, bars and a heritage gallery. The courtyard is a public square, used for markets, festivals and summer concerts. Entry is free.
