Holmfirth

Stone mill town in the Holme Valley, known for Last of the Summer Wine

Holmfirth is a small stone town packed into the steep Holme Valley, south of Huddersfield, on the edge of the Peak District. For nearly forty years it was the setting of the BBC comedy Last of the Summer Wine, and Sid's Café and the steps where the characters sat still draw fans.

Away from the television connection, it is an appealing place of narrow lanes, weavers' cottages and riverside mills, with a good arts scene, including the old Picturedrome cinema, now a music venue. The moors above have fine walking, and the valley's reservoirs are a reminder of the Holmfirth flood of 1852, when a dam burst and swept through the town.
