Bolton Castle

Almost complete 14th-century castle above Wensleydale, once Mary Queen of Scots' prison

A great square castle of the 1390s on the north side of Wensleydale, still standing almost to its full height and still owned by the family who built it. Mary Queen of Scots was held here in 1568 and 1569. Inside you can see the great chamber, kitchens and dungeon, and there are gardens, a maze, falconry displays and wide views down the dale.
