Masham is a small market town on the edge of lower Wensleydale, built around a huge market square. It is best known for its beer: two breweries stand a few streets apart. Theakston, brewing here since 1827, makes Old Peculier. Black Sheep was founded in 1992 by Paul Theakston after the family firm was sold. Both run tours with tastings.
The town has a large sheep fair every September. The Druid's Temple, a fake stone circle built as a folly in the 1820s, stands in the woods a few miles to the west.
