A walking-tour guide's history of the streets most people hurry through, and a veteran outdoor writer's magazine for the city's wild edges

Sheffield's best independent writing is in two Substack newsletters, and both are by people who have lived the subject for years. A feature writer who has covered Sheffield's outdoors for thirty years runs a magazine about its rivers, woods, parks and the volunteers who look after them.

Between them they lead to Fitzalan Square, with a medieval lane still running across it, and to Wardsend, an overgrown cemetery above the Don.
