Lighthouse of 1856 on Altacarry Head, where Marconi's team made the first commercial wireless link in 1898
The East Lighthouse stands on the cliffs of Altacarry Head at the north-east corner of Rathlin, first lit in 1856. The RSPB's walking trails at Craigmacagan, at this end of the island, are good for buzzards, ravens and Irish hares.
A short way south are the scant remains of Bruce's Castle, destroyed in 1575 at the time of the massacre of the island's garrison and inhabitants.
A story
On 6 July 1898 employees of Guglielmo Marconi established the world's first commercial wireless telegraph link between this lighthouse and Kenmara House in Ballycastle. The spire of the Catholic church in Ballycastle served as a mast for one of the early transmissions.
