Cellardyke

Old fishing village joined onto Anstruther's east end, with a tiny 16th-century harbour and narrow streets of fishermen's houses.

Cellardyke, once called Nether Kilrenny, merges seamlessly with Anstruther's east end, but it feels quieter and older. Its little harbour, Skinfast Haven, was built in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1829–31. In the 1860s more than fifty boats worked from here. Fishing was dangerous, and the village lost many boats and crews. After a storm wrecked the harbour in 1898, the remaining boats moved to Anstruther's new harbour.

Walk along Shore Street from Anstruther to the harbour, where the Haven pub does seafood. Then carry on along the coastal path towards Crail.

A story
The name is thought to come from "Sillerdykes", silver walls: the sun glinting off fish scales on the nets hung up to dry on the dykes around the harbour.
