The Strathspey Railway runs ten miles of the old Highland line from Aviemore through Boat of Garten to Broomhill, where the track simply ends in the fields and the train reverses. It leaves from platform 3 of Aviemore's mainline station. Buy tickets on that platform, not at the mainline ticket office. The locomotive collection is based at Boat of Garten.
Trains run from about April to October, often behind steam, and the round trip takes nearly two hours. Just north of the station you pass the four-road engine shed the Highland Railway built in 1898. The Speyside Way path runs alongside the line, so you can ride one way and walk or cycle back.
