Linn of Dee

Narrow rocky gorge where the River Dee squeezes through a slot, west of Braemar at the road's end.

About six miles west of Braemar, the young River Dee forces its way through a rocky gorge about 300 yards long, deep and narrow enough that the water churns dark below the road bridge. There's a car park in the pines, and short paths follow the rocks along the gorge.

The Linn is also where the road ends and the long walk begins. The tracks west lead into Glen Dee and on through the Lairig Ghru to Coylumbridge near Aviemore. That's about 20 rough miles with no shelter, so it's a serious day and not a stroll.
