Royal Dornoch Golf Club

Celebrated links on the Dornoch Firth, among the top-ranked courses in the world and played over since at least 1616.

Royal Dornoch has two 18-hole links courses beside the firth, the Championship and the Struie. The club dates from 1877 and was made "Royal" by Edward VII in 1906. Old Tom Morris laid out much of the Championship course on his visits in 1886 and 1889. It has never hosted a modern professional tournament, but it has held the British Amateur and several Scottish Amateur championships, and Golf Digest ranked it second in the world outside the US.

Visitors can play, but book well ahead for summer. If you don't play, the public path along the edge of the links to the beach gives you the same gorse, dunes and firth light for free.

A story
The earliest evidence of golf at Dornoch is an expense account from 1616 covering golf clubs for the young 13th Earl of Sutherland, who had been sent to the town for his schooling. The golfer and course designer Donald Ross was born in Dornoch.
