Barnhill

Remote farmhouse in the far north of Jura where George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four

Barnhill is a plain white farmhouse near the northern end of Jura, overlooking the Sound of Jura, at the end of a long rough track beyond the public road. George Orwell rented it from 1946 and, already very ill with tuberculosis, finished Nineteen Eighty-Four here before leaving for a sanatorium in January 1949. He never came back.

The house is still owned by the family who rented it to Orwell and is let to visitors, so treat it as a private house rather than a museum. For most people the pilgrimage is the journey itself — the long road north and the walk in — which says more about why he came here than any plaque could.
