Grey Mare's Tail

Sixty-metre hanging-valley waterfall in a National Trust nature reserve, with a steep path up to Loch Skeen.

About eight miles northeast of Moffat on the A708, the Tail Burn drains out of Loch Skeen and falls 60 metres down a hanging valley into the Moffat Water. It's the fifth-highest waterfall in the UK. The surrounding 922 hectares are a National Trust for Scotland nature reserve, with car parking at the foot of the falls.

The path up beside the falls to Loch Skeen is one of the most popular walks in the area. It's steep, so wear proper footwear and keep away from the edge. Look out for peregrines, ravens and the reserve's wild goats. Above the loch, White Coomb (821 m) is one of the highest hills in southern Scotland. Covenanters hid out in these hills in the 17th century.
