The Deer Park, Marloes

Clifftop headland at the tip of the Marloes peninsula, looking over Jack Sound to Skomer

The National Trust's open headland at the far west end of the Marloes peninsula, just beyond Martin's Haven. A path loops round its cliffs to Wooltack Point, with views across Jack Sound to Skomer and, from the point, over nearly all of St Brides Bay to Ramsey Island. Choughs feed on the short grass, gannets and porpoises work the tide races in the sound, and grey seals pup on the beaches below in late August and September.

It is the closest you can get to the islands without a boat, and a good spot for sunset. The national park's Deer Park and Marloes circuit is 5.2 miles and mostly level.

A story
The Deer Park has never held a deer. A walled enclosure was built for them in the eighteenth century as part of the Kensington estate at St Brides, but the animals were never introduced. Welsh mountain ponies graze it today.
