Newport has two beaches, separated by the river Nevern: the Parrog on the town side and Newport Sands (Traeth Mawr) across the estuary. The Sands is the big one, a broad stretch of sand backed by dunes and the golf links, and it is the place to swim, surf or walk the dog.
By road it is a short drive round the estuary. At low tide it is possible to cross the river on foot from the Parrog, but take care.
