Grundy Lake Provincial Park lies south of the French River area and works well as the softer, more accessible outdoor stop. It has beaches, hiking trails, canoeing, and camping among the same granite-and-forest landscape.
It is not as historically loaded as the French River itself, but for travellers with children, limited time, or no canoe route planned, it may be the easier place to spend a whole afternoon outside.
