Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic's second city, sits in the heart of the fertile Cibao Valley surrounded by tobacco fields and low mountains. Founded in 1495, it is the country's major industrial centre and a proud, working city that runs on its own rhythm rather than on tourism.
This is not a beach destination — Santiago lies inland, a couple of hours south of the north coast resorts. What it offers instead is a window into everyday Dominican life: bustling markets, a lively carnival in February with elaborate costumes and floats, and a college-town energy driven by several universities. The Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, a towering marble column on a hilltop, dominates the skyline and offers sweeping views of the Cibao Valley.
Santiago is the centre of Dominican cigar production. The Centro León is one of the best cultural museums in the Caribbean and houses the La Aurora cigar factory behind a glass wall. If baseball is more your thing, catch an Águilas Cibaeñas game at Estadio Cibao — the atmosphere is electric. The upscale Gurabo district east of the centre is where most of the city's better restaurants and bars are concentrated.
Santiago makes the natural base for the Cibao and the mountains behind it: Jarabacoa and the climb up Pico Duarte are both within reach, and the road south from here is the way into the interior.
