Mahahual

Quiet Costa Maya beach town with a reef-protected shore and access to Banco Chinchorro.

Mahahual is a small beach town on the Costa Maya, south of the big Riviera Maya resort strip and close enough to Belize that the Caribbean feels wide open. It was once a fishing village, then became the shore town beside the Costa Maya cruise port, but away from ship days it still has a slow, sandy rhythm.

The reason to come is the water. A reef lies close enough offshore to keep the beach calm, the malecón is made for an easy barefoot wander, and dive boats use Mahahual as a base for Banco Chinchorro, one of Mexico's great reef reserves. Inland, Chacchoben gives the town a serious Maya day trip rather than just another beach-and-palapa stop.

Mahahual is best when you accept its two moods. On cruise days it can feel crowded and transactional near the beach clubs. On quieter days it is a simple place for swimming, snorkelling, seafood, and early nights with the sea a few steps away.

Activities

Mahahual sits on the Mesoamerican barrier reef at the point where it starts running south towards Belize, and the diving is the reason to be here. The reef is a few hundred metres out, shallow and in good condition, and on most days there is nobody on it.

The exception is the cruise pier, a couple of kilometres north. When a ship is in, the malecón fills and the nearest dive sites get busy; when one is not, the village is almost silent. Check the schedule before you plan a day.

The serious trip is Banco Chinchorro, two and a half hours offshore: the largest coral atoll in the northern hemisphere, a biosphere reserve, and a graveyard of wrecks on its windward reef. Weather closes it often, so allow spare days.

Inland the Chacchoben and Kohunlich ruins are a short drive, and the lagoons and mangroves behind the village are worth a boat.

Things to Do

Mahahual's best sights are close to the water, with one excellent Maya ruins trip inland. The reef, beach, and archaeological zone make it worth more than a quick cruise stop.
