A family operation running private boats out of the fishing village into the Ría Lagartos biosphere reserve — a long shallow lagoon behind a barrier of mangrove, and the most important flamingo feeding ground in Mexico.

Flamingos are here year-round in some number and in the thousands between roughly April and September, when they nest further along the ría. Crocodiles are in the mangrove channels, and the bird list for the reserve runs past three hundred species including the whole wintering shorebird population of this coast.

Trips usually take in the Las Coloradas salt ponds, where the brine shrimp that colour the flamingos pink also turn the water an improbable rose. Swimming in them is prohibited and the prohibition is now enforced; operators who offer it are selling a fine.
