The easternmost beach strip of the San Juan metropolitan area, technically in Carolina rather than San Juan proper, and the one immediately beside the airport — planes come in low over the water, which some people mind and others rather enjoy.
The beach is the best in the metro area: wider than Condado, with calmer water and enough room that it never feels like the city. The neighbourhood behind it is more spread out and less walkable, organised around Avenida Isla Verde and the resorts along it, so getting between places generally means a car or a short taxi.
Beyond the resort strip, Piñones begins a few minutes east: a stretch of coast road through mangroves lined with open-air kiosks frying alcapurrias and bacalaítos over charcoal, which is where locals go at weekends and is better eating than anything on the avenue.
