Serra do Rio do Rastro

One of the world's most dramatic mountain roads, zigzagging down the escarpment of the Serra Geral

The Serra do Rio do Rastro is a road — the SC-390 — that climbs the escarpment of the Serra Geral in Santa Catarina in a series of tight hairpins, rising some fourteen hundred metres over about thirty kilometres between Lauro Müller in the lowlands and Bom Jardim da Serra on the plateau. Seen from the viewpoint at the top, the road coils down the cliff like a ribbon, and it regularly appears on lists of the world's most spectacular drives.

The mirante at the summit is the place to stop. On a clear day you can see all the way to the coast; on many days you are above the clouds, which fill the valley below. The road is lit at night, which makes for a striking view after dark, and coatis wander the viewpoint looking for scraps.

Drive it in daylight and in good weather: fog and rain are common, and the hairpins are steep and narrow. It links naturally with the highland towns of Urubici and São Joaquim, and with the coast around Tubarão.
