Taipingzhai is the broader section of wall that includes the Huangyaguan pass and extends several kilometres in both directions along the ridge. A well-marked circuit trail allows you to walk a substantial section without retracing your steps, ascending the ridge to a high watchtower and returning by a different route through valley terrain. The total loop is around 8 kilometres and takes three to four hours at a relaxed pace.
The views from the watchtowers extend over forested ridges in every direction — in autumn the hillsides turn red and gold and the views are particularly striking. The section is open year-round but can be icy in winter. The small visitor centre at the trailhead has a basic map and sells entrance tickets; there are a few food stalls nearby but no restaurants within walking distance of the wall itself.
