Everything at Huangyaguan centres on the Great Wall itself. The wall here climbs through steep Yanshan mountain terrain that is dramatic and relatively uncrowded — the reward for the three-hour drive from Beijing. Allow at least half a day to walk a meaningful section; the Taipingzhai circuit and the Widow's Wall area reward time and a willingness to climb.
