Machen Pomra Shrine

Scattered along the kora route are several small shrines and cairn sites dedicated to Machen Pomra, the mountain deity who calls this massif home. The most significant cluster sits near the base of the main peak on the southern approach, where generations of pilgrims have stacked mani stones carved with the six-syllable mantra and draped the surrounding juniper trees with hundreds of prayer flags.

The site is not a formal monastery or temple — it is a living accumulation of devotion, added to over centuries. Visitors should treat it with the same respect they would bring to any active religious site: no photography of praying pilgrims without permission, no walking counterclockwise around cairns (all circumambulation in Tibetan Buddhism goes clockwise). The location at roughly 4,200 metres gives commanding views across the plateau and up toward the permanent snowfields of the main massif.
