Hailuogou is about 350 kilometres southwest of Chengdu and most of a full day's journey by road. The most common approach is a bus from Chengdu to Kangding (about 4 hours), then a change to a bus heading down through Luding and up to Moxi (another 3–4 hours). The road through the Luding Gorge is spectacular and steep, descending sharply from the plateau to the river valleys before climbing again to Moxi.
Direct tourist buses from Chengdu to Moxi operate during peak seasons and take about 7–8 hours. Check departure schedules carefully as services vary by season and are less reliable outside the summer months.
From Kangding the journey to Moxi takes roughly 3 hours by bus or shared taxi. The road passes through Luding, where the famous chain bridge from the Long March is located — a stop worth making if you have the flexibility.
Within the park, private vehicles are not permitted beyond the entrance. Shuttle buses connect the entrance, the hot springs, and the glacier viewing area. The cable car covers the upper section.
Moxi has adequate guesthouses at various price points. Staying inside the park is not possible; all accommodation is in Moxi or along the approach road.
