Bhitarkanika Mangroves

The mangrove creeks are the reason to come to Bhitarkanika. Boats move through narrow channels edged with breathing roots, palms, and dense green walls where kingfishers, egrets, and herons flash in and out of view.

The experience is slow and watchful rather than dramatic every minute. Keep your eyes on muddy banks for basking crocodiles, and bring binoculars if birds matter to you.

A story
Bhitarkanika is often described as India's second-largest mangrove ecosystem after the Sundarbans. The forest looks quiet from a boat, but the tangle of roots is a nursery, hunting ground, and storm buffer all at once.
