Abel Tasman National Monument

The Abel Tasman National Monument marks the 1642 visit of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and his crew, the first Europeans known to have reached New Zealand. The monument was built in 1942, three centuries after the voyage.

The stop is short and easy: a five-minute track leads to the monument and a headland viewpoint over Golden Bay. It is a good add-on if you are already exploring the northern side of Abel Tasman National Park.
