Separation Point (Te Matau)

Separation Point — Te Matau in Māori — marks the northern tip of the park, the geographic divide between Tasman Bay and Golden Bay. The point is reached by a 90-minute round-trip walk from the Coast Track between Whariwharangi and Totaranui, and rewards you with one of the few open ocean viewpoints in the park.

A small fur seal colony hauls out on the rocks below the point, easily watched from the headland without disturbance. The view back along the northwestern coast on a clear day takes in most of Golden Bay; in rough weather it is one of the few spots in the park where you can see real ocean swell.
