Cape Clear Island

Irish-speaking island and the southernmost inhabited part of Ireland, 40 minutes by ferry

Cape Clear Island (Cléire in Irish) is the southernmost inhabited part of Ireland, about 110 people living on a rugged island off the coast of West Cork. It's a Gaeltacht, where Irish is spoken every day. A narrow isthmus called the Waist divides the island into east and west, with the North Harbour, where the ferries come in, on one side and the South Harbour, popular with yachts in summer, on the other.

The island has standing stones, a passage tomb, a Napoleonic-era signal tower and a heritage centre and museum. The ferry from Baltimore takes about 40 minutes and sails two to four times a day; there are also boats from Schull. In summer, Cape Clear Ferries run trips out to the Fastnet Rock and its lighthouse, the southernmost point of Ireland.
