Old Church Cemetery

Port graveyard north of town holding the mass graves of Lusitania victims

The Old Church Cemetery lies about a kilometre north of the town centre. Its church fell into ruin after 1815, but the graveyard stayed in use, and because it served a port it took in many who died at sea or while passing through. The best known graves are the mass graves of more than a hundred victims of the Lusitania, sunk off the Old Head of Kinsale in May 1915.

Others buried here include 17 crew members of HMS Lapwing who died of dysentery in 1804 and 1805, the poet Charles Wolfe, author of "The Burial of Sir John Moore after Corunna", and the boxer and singer Jack Doyle. It's a quiet, moving place, and a counterpoint to the busier Titanic attractions in town.
