Glengowla Mines

Glengowla Mines are a 19th-century lead and silver mining site near Oughterard, on the eastern edge of Connemara. The mines worked from 1851 to 1865, extracting galena from the hillside before the workings were abandoned.

Visits are by guided tour, which explains the geology, working conditions, and short boom-and-bust history of the mine. The site is on a farm that also offers sheepdog demonstrations, making it one of the more hands-on heritage stops between Galway and the deeper Connemara landscape.
