Killaloe Bridge

Thirteen-arch stone bridge over the Shannon between Killaloe and Ballina, now car-free

Killaloe Bridge crosses the Shannon between Killaloe in County Clare and Ballina in County Tipperary. There has been a bridge here for over a thousand years: a wooden one is first recorded in 1013, and floods have swept away several since. The present stone bridge, from the 18th century, has thirteen arches, with a lifting section added in 1929.

For years the narrow bridge carried all the traffic between the two towns, under traffic lights. In May 2025 a new road bridge named after Brian Boru opened downstream, and since October 2025 the old bridge has been for pedestrians and cyclists only, which makes it a much nicer place to stand and watch the river. The quays for Lough Derg cruises are close by.
