Lucinasco

Lucinasco is one of the most intact medieval villages in the Impero Valley — a small cluster of stone houses on a hillside surrounded by olive groves, with two churches that have stood largely unchanged since the 15th century. Santo Stefano and the Maddalena face each other across the village's small square, both still in active use, both preserving elements of their original fabric.

The village is genuinely small (population in the hundreds) and has remained agricultural rather than becoming a tourist attraction. The olive groves around it produce some of the valley's best oil, and the area around the village in autumn, when the harvest is under way, has a particular quality of light and smell that is hard to describe but easy to remember.

There is no visitor infrastructure beyond a few benches and the churches: bring your own water, walk the narrow lanes, and leave. The village is best visited as part of a drive up the valley rather than as a destination in itself.
