Amble

Small harbour town at the mouth of the Coquet, with boat trips round the puffin island offshore

Amble is a small working harbour town at the mouth of the River Coquet, at the southern end of the Northumberland Coast. It is less pretty than the villages further north and much more relaxed, with a fish quay, a marina and a row of wooden huts selling local food and crafts at the Harbour Village.

A mile offshore, Coquet Island is an RSPB reserve with tens of thousands of puffins and the only colony of roseate terns in Britain. Nobody may land, but boats from the harbour circle the island in the nesting season. Warkworth and its castle are a mile and a half up the river.
