Craster is a tiny fishing village around a stone harbour, and it is famous for two things. One is its kippers: herring split and smoked over oak in the smokehouse of L. Robson & Sons, which the same family has run since 1906. The other is the walk north along the grassy clifftop to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, which takes about half an hour.
From Dunstanburgh you can carry on down onto the long sands of Embleton Bay, then back by the same path or inland. It is one of the classic short walks on the Northumberland Coast. Craster has one pub and a couple of cafés, and the car park at the edge of the village fills early on summer weekends.
